Conducted by our collaborating industrial affiliates program SUETRI-A, this study investigates hydrogen generation during serpentinization under controlled laboratory conditions designed to simulate subsurface flow systems. The experiments demonstrate that hydrogen production can occur while maintaining permeability pathways through reacting rock, an important result for understanding both natural hydrogen systems and engineered “stimulated hydrogen” concepts. The work highlights how mineral reactions, fluid flow, and fracture evolution interact to sustain hydrogen generation over time. Conducted by a Stanford research group specializing in subsurface engineering and reactive transport processes, this research provides critical insight into how hydrogen can be generated and maintained in permeable geological systems.
